Why Home Birth Matters
Why Home Birth Matters
In the 21st century, women are supposed to have a choice about where they give birth. But when that choice is home, women often encounter obstacles, despite robust evidence that birth at home is safe, beneficial and should be available for women who want it.
Why Home Birth Matters is a clear discussion of the reality of modern home birth, which aims to show how the home environment supports and powers the birth process, while encouraging parents to consider how it might work for them.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'Simply brilliant. Easy to read and digest, lots of facts and figures, informative and generally really engaging. What I loved most is that it completely debunks some of the myths around childbirth and labour. It’s not preachy or disrespectful of any type of birth but instead it empowers you and helps you realise that birth is not a medical process. It is natural and women birth best when at home, in the quiet, dark and comfort of their own space where they aren’t interrupted. It should continue to be natural even when intervention becomes necessary, as the mother and baby’s emotional and physical wellbeing are so critical to the woman’s body being able to birth her baby and recover afterwards. The over medicalisation of birth in the last 50 years is to blame for many women now being scared and afraid of giving birth and believing that the hospital is the safest place, when yet, the studies show time and again that home is actually safer and has more positive outcomes with less intervention if it is planned that way. It is such a shame that medical professionals have lost touch with this. Even in my experience (being young and low risk) my midwife still encouraged a cascade of medical interventions without realising (offering sweeps, increased monitoring, hospital admissions, induction etc).I was already set on having a homebirth for my second but this has completely given me the confidence that it’s the right decision. I promise you won’t regret reading this book - even if you just want to educate yourself to ensure you have all of the options.'
